What is the favorite quote that describes you as a person?

"Food is life, life is food."

What do you consider as the most important learning from your studies at LEAF Academy?

I learned that it is important to always look at the actions of people, not at what they say. Eventually, anyone can say anything, but what they do on a daily basis, if they are living by the words that are the key, that is when you see the true character.

What are the biggest achievements that you are proud of?

I am proud of Belasý Kolibrík, Art exhibitions and dances, friendships that I made over these four years, and also that I made it through these four years without any serious marks on my mental or physical health (trust me this one can by sometimes challenging).

What is the favorite quote that describes you as a person?

"Most people become bankrupt through having invested too heavily in the prose of life. To have ruined oneself over poetry is an honor."(Oscar Wilde, 1890)

What do you consider as the most important learning from your studies at LEAF Academy?

1. "Knowledge would be fatal. It is the uncertainty that charms one. A mist makes things wonderful." (Oscar Wilde, 1890) We don't ever really know what's going on, and I've fallen in love with that uncertainty. 2. I learned a huge lesson about love. I've become a sort of hippie, with a not-exactly-textbook definition of love. I see love as something you can give endlessly, and I think you can fall in love with anything - a sensation, a feeling, the evening sky or a look somebody throws you. I think at some point I fell in love with humanity. I found out that everyone can be understood if you try hard enough. There is nobody in this world whom I hate, only people I pity. I found out how terribly similar we all are, and to what extent our temperaments are just products of differing uncontrollable circumstances. This means that I never get angry at people. Instead, I ask and listen until I understand where they're coming from. I listen to understand, and from that, the love comes naturally.

What are the biggest achievements that you are proud of?

I've struggled a lot with confidence, identity and relationships. Now, I think I'm able to stand up for myself more than I ever could, my personality is more my doing than I ever thought it could be, and my relationships are more genuine than they have ever been. That is what I'm proud of.

"You never know how strong you are until strong is the only option." - Alex Honnold

What do you consider as the most important learning from your studies at LEAF Academy?

Nowadays, you can learn almost any subject you wish on your own. You can learn how to integrate, how epigenetics works, or how to calculate a battery resistance, all of this, and much more, you can learn on your own. However, what you cannot learn on your own is who you are, what matters to you, and what your place in this world is. These are the things, which you can learn only with the assistance of other people.

What are the biggest achievements that you are proud of?

There are several achievements I could list here, but the one I am most proud of is that I discovered what I ultimately want to achieve in my life. Through the means of biomedical research, I want to help as many people as possible, as much as possible, for as long as possible.

"One man practicing kindness in the wilderness is worth all the temples this world pulls."

What do you consider as the most important learning from your studies at LEAF Academy?

How to prioritize things. With this amount of opportunities that LEAF Academy is offering, you can easily get lost in them. I also learned how essential it is to have the right people around you, and how grateful you should be for finding those.

What are the biggest achievements that you are proud of?

Realizing what I truly want to do - even considering I realized the importance of it (and if not being impacted by the option of others) quite late, I'm proud of being able to persuade it in the future.

What do you consider as the most important learning from your studies at LEAF Academy?

To focus on what is most important to me. Not to my parents, not to my school, not to my friends. Everyone is different, some people are focused on academics, others on working and either of them is fine as long as we are fine with doing it. So instead of making other people happy, we should focus on our happiness first.

What are the biggest achievements that you are proud of?

At LEAF Academy, I consider my biggest achievement to be passing Advanced Placement stats in the third year and getting 5 from AP Art History. I remember how happy I was when I found out. Outside of LEAF – I think I progressed a lot with my work as a graphic designer. It seems like the more I work the more I love graphic design. I don't know if it can be considered an achievement, but it's definitely something that means a lot to me.

Laura Flóra Gaál

Class of 2019

For Laura Flóra Gaál, LEAF Academy was a journey of self-discovery. As a lover of arts and fascinated with any form of storytelling, it turned out that empathy and communication are her strong suits. Laura took part in the community and found connection through the Hungarian, Current Affairs and Rainbow clubs. However, she had troubles as someone who “didn't have the same experience, skills and interests as others”. Laura shares  that her biggest lesson was coming to terms with this: “I started looking for my own road and once I found it I was happier than ever before.” She continues, "LEAF has taught me many valuable life lessons, but if I had to share one it would be this; sometimes you will need to lower your standards or expectations you set for yourself. At first it may feel like giving up on yourself, but the opposite is true; you stop lying to yourself about who you are and are finally living your life as the real you."

When asked about what she would be sad to leave LA, Laura says “Too many things to list: the friendships, the support, the fun classes, cool clubs, barbecues, offsites, teambuilding, Term E’s, and so, so, so much more. I'm grateful to be part of it all, and to have so many amazing people to share these memories with.”

Lucia reflects she is going to “miss the people most of all, they are the cogs in the machine that is LEAF Academy. Martina Pankuchová

Class of 2019

During her time at LEAF Academy, Martina Pankuchová pursued her interest in languages, organizing events and developing creative solutions. When reflecting on her self-development during her studies, Michaela says she learned that “you have to be in harmony with yourself, with your body and soul, otherwise, you won´t be happy.” She will miss the community at LEAF Academy, “Because there are very little places where you can just go and hug both your friends and teachers (at least some of them) whenever you like.”

Samuel Chaba

Class of 2019

During his time at LEAF Academy, Samuel Chaba has appreciated the most the resilience of people who are pushing every day to make this institution more and more extraordinary. Besides his studies and hobbies, he has been involved in residential life as an assistant. If you enjoy skateboarding, video games or photography, then you also have a lot to talk about.

When asked to reflect on his personal development at LEAF Academy, Samuel shares, „I was so sure about all the things that I know, now I'm sure about all the things I don't know “.

She also spent two weeks on the streets of Bratislava with the aim to understand people without homes and experience what they go through.

Sára used her leadership skills by organizing TEDxyouth@Bratislava, an inspiring conference for young people. As an enthusiastic debater, she was part of the IPPF (International Public Policy Forum) team that became world champions. She also conducted a year-long sociological research inside LEAF Academy, focusing on the way the students view, experience and understand LA culture.
Sára shares some important lessons she learned through her engagement at the Academy: „I realised that suffering is not heroic. I figured out that if you want help you need to ask for it and that if you want people to understand what you are going through you need to explain it to them.”

Looking back at his growth throughout his studies at LEAF academy, Stanislav feels he is “proud of where I am right now, when looking back at how I got here and different ambitions I had held before, probably not achievable, and what they are now and all different layers of growth I have gone through."

Timofej Kožuchov

Class of 2019

With his passion for politics, philosophy and inspiring conversations, Timofej Kožuchov participated in many activities which helped him express himself in many topics. Either running for the public office, gaining experience in a similar field, or teaching young students something that I have exclusively learnt through LEAF and the debate club.”

Looking back on his growth at LEAF Academy, Timofej finds “LEAF provided me with two things: more knowledge about the world around me and a more self-aware perception of my strengths. Both allowed me to grow in many ways.” He continues, “Leaving LEAF is like leaving home; it is not easy, because of everything it has given you in life.”

This passion can be seen in the project Zuzana worked on during LEAF Academy – Edutime, an educational program which teaches kids teamwork, communication and entrepreneurial skills. She gained real-life experience at one of the most successful Slovak start-ups, Sli.do.

During her time at LEAF Academy, Zuzana learned “that there is nothing more important than family and friends who can always support me in hard times and give me the courage to overcome any challenge I might ever face.” She found it challenging not to be there to support her younger siblings and reflects, “the older I get, the more I realize that the things that cost nothing, hold the most value.”

I realized what I want, like and need in my life even though it was not easy to accept it at moments”.

Antonín Šámal

Class of 2018

Reflecting on his growth he said “I know I changed, but I don’t have a clue how. I guess I value more the basic and “automatic” things in life and I am more aware of my weaknesses. When asked what was her most important takeaway from her LA experience, this is what she had to say “Reflection. Yes, you read it correctly, reflection. I realized that no matter how influential experiences you would go through, if you didn’t take the time after to evaluate how was it for you, what have you got from it and what would you make differently, you would never truly learn”.

Ema Rajčanová

Class of 2018

Ema Rajčanová’s LEAF Academy experience shaped her and her values, without compromising who she is. Her involvement in the LEAF Academy was always community-based given her roles as a Residential Assistant or Community Principles Committee member. Ema was also a member of EL project which focused on researching extremism among young people in Central Slovakia. During this project, she learned to understand young people not based on what seemed right to her and her values, but what seemed right to them in the environment they were. She realized how often we tend to judge people based on our biases and she also learned how to let them in order to understand people as they are.

“There were a couple of learnings which I am taking away from LEAF Academy: I learnt how to ask for help. I learnt how important it is to stay true to yourself, to be authentic and not to change or do decisions just because somebody else is doing it. I also understood that you do not need to change the world, it is enough to try to make it a better place and to make people around you happier”.

He believes that LEAF Academy has contributed to his growth, this is what he had to say “I would say that I was curious and interested in various topics, but the advanced understanding for many of those was missing before I came to LEAF Academy. He believes LEAF has helped grow as he reflects “I have learned that if what you are doing doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.
